Out of Africa : The Izingwe Lodge

This stunning private game reserve lodge is located in the deep South African bush. Few words can describe how beautiful this place is- almost picture perfect and nestled into the most breathtaking nature.

Izingwe Lodge is the private home of American interior designer Trisha Wilson and her style shines through as the lodge is carefully decorated in a contemporary style whilst still honouring the African wilderness with open spaces and views to die for.

Set on 100 000 acres of malaria free private game reserve in the Waterberg Mountains, Izingwe, which means leopard in Zulu, is the perfect combination of pure nature and style. The home consists of five main parts:  the lodge with a large living and dining area, a veranda and bar; three guest villas, personal quarters, a gym and an office.

" My design philosophy is simple – to not impose a signature style but rather to create unique places customised for each client and in this case, the client is me.  The buildings at Izingwe all blend in with the unique topography of the land.  And the simplicity of the structure is juxtaposed with a creative Colonial / African bush flare of furniture with much of the colour from nature brought into the lodge.  Every room is open and airy which creates a borderless sense of place in the African wilderness."

The place is bursting with character and a good way to describe the style is great architecture and design in combination with the raw beauty of nature. The indoors flows with the outdoors with vast open spaces and terraces to enjoy the views. Have a dip in the infinity pool or enjoy a glass of wine on one of the sumptuous day beds while watching the wildlife from your front row seats.

The Izingwe Lodge comes with all the luxurious amenities such as full time chef, heli pad, safari guide and housekeeping personnel etc. Your safari guide will take you for morning and evening game drives through the area and the nearby water holes, where you hopefully will be able to spot the big fives as well as savour the nature's flora and fauna.

The lodge was initially only build to be used privately by Trisha and her family, but to Trisha it became important that others were also able to experience this place and its magical surroundings. She also wanted to give something back why she decided to rent the place out and let a portion of the income from guests go to carefully selected charities.

The local, rural township is home to about 35 000 people including hundreds of AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children.  " In 1997 I established a non-profit organisation that provides education, health care services, food and shelter to the children and families of this area.  Guests to the lodge may visit the area and volunteer at the local soup kitchen.  This is a project close to my heart and part of why I love my home away from home in Africa" says Trisha.
